I'm rolling out a patch management system for a customer. What best practices can I share with them to simplify the patch management process once I'm out of the picture?

Most importantly, make certain your customer has a documented process to follow for implementing a patch. You should walk them through the release and implementation of a set of patches prior to leaving the customer's site, and ensure that they are following the documented process.

Make sure that the people assigned to managing the patch management system have received the proper training and knowledge transfer.

Finally, leave the customer with appropriate documentation for the patch management system. This way, if there is an issue with the system, they have the ability to address it.
