Application layer protection technologies have recently been introduced into network firewalls to block attacks such as buffer overflows and SQL injection. While providing some of the same functionality as a pure-play intrusion prevention system, this added protection comes at a significant loss in firewall performance. Overall, application layer protection is a less expensive way to protect against common attacks, but care must be taken to ensure that firewalls can handle the added load.
