Attacks from malware riding on instant messaging and P2P connections rose by a record number in October.
Security analyst Akonix Systems tracked 88 IM attacks, a total 40% higher than last month's year-to-date high. New IM-based worms have caused 325 attacks so far this year, a number that has steadily risen for the last two years, driven by growth in corporate IM use of 22% per year.
IT administrators struggle to control the attacks both technologically and with policies that forbid users from installing their own IM clients. Such techniques have so far been ineffective, opening yet another opportunity for VARs able to plug IM security holes for their customers.
