Microsoft Corp. has released a set of programming interfaces designed to help security software developers tie into the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.
The first set of APIs, announced on Tuesday, provide controls to let developers limit which applications can be launched or manipulated, and prevent tampering with process hosting security software, memory based controls and image-loading -- all of which are commonly used targets for hackers.
The first set -- which represent a reversal on Microsoft's previous position that security vendors wouldn't need extensive APIs to work with Vista -- will be released in both 32- and 64-bit versions along with Service Pack 1.
